Purpose of "Enable selection on sites" tool

This tool can be used to enable selection on websites that have disabled it by default.

Requirements to use this tool

To use this tool, a user should have "Toolkit For Web Developer" chrome extension installed on their web browser.

Enabling selection inside iframe elements is supported but rule of parent document is applied to child frame instead of applying a separate rule by checking the hostname of the child frame.

Information about "hostname"

A hostname is the name or address of the webserver to be accessed. Hostname is not case-sensitive (e.g., www.example.com and WWW.ExampLE.com are equivalent).

Examples of URLs and their hostnames

Hostnames are composed of a series of labels concatenated with dots. For example, "en.wikipedia.org" is a hostname. Each label must be from 1 to 63 characters long, and the entire hostname (including the delimiting dots but not a trailing dot) has a maximum of 253 ASCII characters.

How to use "Enable selection on sites" tool

Follow these steps to use this tool:

  • Click on "Toolkit For Web Developer" extension icon, after that a popup page will be opened.
  • Click on "Open background tools" button, this will open background tools in a new tab page.
  • Select "Enable selection on sites" from left drawer menu.
  • After that, "Enable selection on sites" tool will be shown on a user's screen.
  • Enter a hostname for which a user wants to disable selection and then click on "Add" button.
  • Click on "Apply changes and reload" button to apply changes.

How to edit an existing rule

Follow these steps to edit rule:

  • Click on "Toolkit For Web Developer" extension icon, after that a popup page will be opened.
  • Click on "Open background tools" button, this will open background tools in a new tab page.
  • Select "Enable selection on sites" from left drawer menu.
  • After that, "Enable selection on sites" tool will be shown on a user's screen.
  • Click on "Edit" button of a rule.
  • Add a new hostname and click on "Save" button.
  • Click on "Apply changes and reload" button to apply changes.

How to delete an existing rule

Follow these steps to delete a rule:

  • Click on "Toolkit For Web Developer" extension icon, after that a popup page will be opened.
  • Click on "Open background tools" button, this will open background tools in a new tab page.
  • Select "Enable selection on sites" from left drawer menu.
  • After that, "Enable selection on sites" tool will be shown on a user's screen.
  • Click on "Delete" button of a rule.
  • Click on "Apply changes and reload" button to apply changes.

How to enable an existing rule

Follow these steps to enable a rule:

  • Click on "Toolkit For Web Developer" extension icon, after that a popup page will be opened.
  • Click on "Open background tools" button, this will open background tools in a new tab page.
  • Select "Enable selection on sites" from left drawer menu.
  • After that, "Enable selection on sites" tool will be shown on a user's screen.
  • A list of saved rules will be displayed on screen.
  • Use the toggle button that shows "Disabled" to enable a specific rule. If the background of the stored rule turns from red to normal it means that rule is enabled.
  • Click on "Apply changes and reload" button to apply changes.

How to disable an existing rule

Follow these steps to disable a rule:

  • Click on "Toolkit For Web Developer" extension icon, after that a popup page will be opened.
  • Click on "Open background tools" button, this will open background tools in a new tab page.
  • Select "Enable selection on sites" from left drawer menu.
  • After that, "Enable selection on sites" tool will be shown on a user's screen.
  • A list of saved rules will be displayed on screen.
  • Use the toggle button that shows "Enabled" to disable a specific rule. If the background of a rule becomes red it means that rule is disabled.
  • Click on "Apply changes and reload" button to apply changes.
